The electricity generated by a solar PV system depends on the orientation and tilt of the PV panels, and in some cases, its ability to track the sun throughout the day. Because photovoltaic panels operate more efficiently when oriented directly at the sun, some systems use solar-tracking technology to increase electricity generation by rotating the panels along one or two axes. More than 50 percent of the operating utility-scale solar PV systems in the U.S. use some form of tracking technology, and those systems tend to be located in the Southwest, where solar resources are more favorable.

The photovoltaic industry has been low margin for so many periods in its history that the concept of a margin healthy enough to profitably run an entire company is anathema to it. Focus on the benefits of multi gigawatt economies of scale on margins belies the lengths that PV manufacturers have undergone to salvage margin; lengths that include sourcing lower cost and thus lower quality backsheets, EVA, glass, junction boxes and polysilicon.

Traditionally, solar electricity generation has been driven by feed-in tariffs. Each kilowatt-hour of electricity generated by a solar system has been given a fixed high value independent from the time of the day and location. But, as Navigant Research has discussed in the past, that is not the real value of the produced electricity as electricity prices fluctuate depending on supply and demand. This approach is changing as countries around the world reduce feed-in tariffs or eliminate net metering to better reflect the value of solar generation once it hits the grid. To exemplify this shift, we look at a residential installation but the concepts apply to larger behind-the-meter installations.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) module and system degradation continues to be an important and unresolved variable in the PV industry.1 One of the principal uses for degradation data in the calculation of levelized cost of energy (LCOE) calculation—a metric used by actors across the PV value chain for decision-making purposes (e.g. benchmarking PV against other sources of generation, and setting power purchase agreement [PPA] rates). One of the most common ways to input degradation in an LCOE model is via a flat rate (0.5%/year is a typical default value), which discounts the nameplate capacity cumulatively each year of project life. However, the available degradation data do not necessarily privilege such an approach, and this begs the question: is the industry standard for degradation accounting in project finance models delivering the most accurate LCOE?

Energy shifting arbitrage and demand charge reduction are common savings mechanisms for behind the meter applications, but applications may include wholesale services such as demand response and even ancillary services such as frequency savings. The key is to make sure these intake strategies (savings and revenue) and multiple services can operate simultaneously, conflict-free, and without unnecessarily degrading the energy storage platform itself. In Part I of this series on energy storage investment, we discussed concerns about the safety of various battery chemistries.

Stacking two solar cells one over the other has advantages: Because the energy is ?harvested? in two stages, and overall the sunlight can be converted to electricity more efficiently. Empa researchers have come up with a procedure that makes it possible to produce thin film tandem solar cells in which a thin perovskite layer is used. The processing of perovskite takes place at just 50 degrees Celsius and such a process is potentially applicable for low cost roll-to-roll production in future.

The global market for zero-energy buildings is projected to achieve explosive growth from $629.3 million in 2014 to $1.4 trillion by 2035. But what exactly is a zero-energy building? A number of different definitions for zero-energy buildings (ZEBs) have been used across the industry, including buildings that use zero electricity, site energy, or source energy, or that produce zero greenhouse gas emissions. Some definitions include additional caveats such as prohibiting direct combustion of fuels in the building and exclusion of off-site renewables where additionality cannot be demonstrated.
